Bikepacking packing list
What really needs to come – compact and sorted by category. Treat it as a starting point: adapt it to season, distance and how self-supported you ride.
Bags & setup
- Saddle bag, frame bag, handlebar roll (or rack + panniers)
- Small top-tube bag for snacks and phone
- Straps and a few stuff sacks to stay organised
Sleeping
- Sleeping bag to suit the season + sleeping pad
- Tent, tarp or bivy – depending on your style
- Or hotels/hostels: visible in Velosummit as a resupply category along the route
Tools & repair
- Multitool, chain breaker, spare quick link
- Spare tube, patch kit, tyre levers, mini pump
- Zip ties, some duct tape, spoke key
Clothing
- One set to ride in, one to rest in (layering)
- Rain jacket and wind vest – weather shows at the start point
- Gloves, buff, spare socks
Kitchen & water
- Two bottles or a bladder; more reserve in the heat
- Optional stove + pot for self-supported riding
- Bars/emergency food – plan supermarkets and opening hours into the route
Navigation & electronics
- Bike computer or phone with your route as GPX
- Power bank + charging cable, head torch
- Plan the route in Velosummit and export each stage as GPX
Tip: knowing the route in advance means packing lighter. Plan it with elevation, surface and resupply – then you know how much water and food you really need.
Frequently asked
What goes on a bikepacking packing list?
Roughly six blocks: bags & setup, sleeping, tools & repair, clothing, kitchen & water, navigation & electronics. The rest depends on season, duration and whether you go self-supported.
How much luggage is too much?
Rule of thumb: plan the route first, then pack. If you know elevation, surface and resupply along the way (via Velosummit), you can carry less water and food – every kilo saved makes the climbs easier.
Do I need special bikepacking bags?
Not strictly for a first trip. Saddle, frame and handlebar bags are ideal, but a first multi-day tour also works with a rack and waterproof panniers.
